Help your beginning dancer find First Position with this helpful at-home tip!
Virtual classes are helping so many families be able to start or continue dance classes for their little ones safely at home - but sometimes it can be hard knowing how to help your child if you were not a dancer yourself.
Today I'll give you a simple tip to help your tiny dancer achieve success with a basic ballet foot position - First Position. No prior dance knowledge needed!
Step One
Grab a fancy pizza plate like Miss Jody owns! No pizza plate? No problem! Turn it into an arts and crafts project with your child! Draw a pizza slice shape onto a piece of paper or cardboard, ask your child to decorate it and cut it out. Voila! Pizza!
Step Two
Ask your child to stand tall with their feet together, big toes kissing. Sometimes it helps to have your child hold on to a chair or countertop to help them balance during the next part.
Step Three
Help them keep their heels together but open their toes out away from each other like opening a book. Their feet should stay connected at the heels but spread apart just far enough to fit the pizza slice in (pointy side in by their heels).
Step Four
Slide the pizza slice into the empty space between their feet as a way of checking they got it right! Give them a high five and give yourself a pat on the back while you're there. You did it! You helped your beginning dancer with no dance experience required! Don't forget to help them practice First Position/Pizza Feet whenever you can!
Bonus Step Five
Call your favorite pizza place and order dinner. Helping tiny dancers builds up quite an appetite :)
