4 Tips For Virtual Class Success

Maybe it's your first time trying a virtual class with your little one, maybe you tried once or twice and it didn't go exactly as you expected. Here are 4 ways to make virtual classes go a little more smoothly in your home.

Set up your space

Always use the same room for virtual classes and clear away as many distractions as you can. Young children can benefit from a visual reminder of where to stand so use a blanket, yoga mat, or masking tape "X" on the floor to show them where they should be during class. If they get too carried away give a gentle reminder to come back to their spot and praise them when they do!

Put the screen up high

Place whichever device you're using up high away from little hands wanting to grab it.

Lower your expectations

You've paid for this class, you have a picture in your mind that this is going to be the best thing ever, and then when class time comes your child won't do ANYTHING! It's so frustrating when children don't do exactly what we want or when our expectations don't meet reality. We're working with very young children here who are not trained performers. Let go of that picture in your mind of how things are going to go. It's ok and completely normal if your child is not "on task" every moment of every class. I promise you by being in class with me they are still learning even when it doesn't look like it. They may even surprise you after class with reenacting the parts where you thought they weren't paying attention at all! Praise any and all ways they participate and then come back to class and try again!

Model the behavior you want to see

Show your child what participating in a virtual class looks like. Sing the songs, do the dances, be silly. Even if they wander off for a few minutes try to continue your own participation in the class to model for them "this is how we participate". You may feel a little silly but being this example for them is a tremendous way to teach them listening skills and following directions. And as a bonus - when you fully participate alongside your child you're strengthening the bond you have together.
